"Like all individuals, transgender people appreciate friendly and courteous service. However, transgender individuals also have unique needs when interacting with the health care system."

In collaboration with transgender health care providers, researchers and front-line staff, Fenway Institute of Health created a helpful tool of best practices for front-line health care staff to provide affirmative care for transgender and gender non-conforming individuals. The needs assessments and review of available research reveal a great need for front-line staff to learn how to appropriately and sensitively communicate with transgender patients. With increased need for health centers and other health care organizations to become more culturally competent in providing affirmative services for transgender clients, this tool addresses the often overlooked best practices for training front-line staff.
