A fundamental component to aging includes conversations on end of life, death and dying. In many cultures death and dying is a topic that is largely avoided. Dying is considered a medicalized emergency rather than a natural completion of life. Alongside heartache, pain and loss can be a beautifully sacred, mystical process, akin to birth, that is deserving of individual contemplation and reflection, profound open conversations, and ultimately offers an opportunity for meaningful connection and community. SAGE has developed a series of end-of-life resources to support LGBTQ+ individuals, their loved ones, and allies. This series includes a glossary of terms and micro-learning videos to educate LGBTQ+ elders on various end-of-life topics.
Note: this video references the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO), which no longer exists. NHPCO combined with the National Alliance for Home Care in 2024, and the combined organizations are now The National Alliance for Care at Home (aka The Alliance). You can learn more about The Alliance at their website: Homepage – National Alliance for Care at Home | National Alliance for Care at Home.
