Synopsis

This report highlights a number of issues facing LGBT communities, as well as existing organizing efforts among LGBT groups that effectively address racial and economic justice matters.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people have long been involved in efforts for racial and economic justice. Today, LGBT organizers and groups are increasingly drawing connections between the movement for LGBT rights and the movement for economic and racial justice, noting that people have multiple, layered identities and are members of more than one community at the same time, simultaneously experiencing oppression and privilege.

The aim of this report is threefold: 1. to identify the range and complexity of issues faced by low-income LGBT people and LGBT people of color; 2. to identify LGBT organizations that are working primarily on racial and economic justice issues; 3. and to identify foundations that are supporting this work and make recommendations to expand that funding base.
