Synopsis

Updated in 2024 - This guide helps service providers learn how to ask questions about sexual orientation and gender identity to older adults in safe and respectful ways.

Every question should not be based on assumptions, of ‘oh you’re heterosexual.’ Even if I circled married I have to be very specific in saying husband, because they are going to assume I’m married to a woman.”

SAGE’s National Resource Center on LGBTQ+ Aging was created to address the country’s need for information on these unique and diverse populations. One of our first tasks was to create this guide, which has been updated in 2016, 2023 and 2024 to reflect emerging research and best practices to help service providers ask questions about sexual orientation and gender identity in safe and respectful ways.
