The Policy Issues and Social Concerns Facing Older Adults with HIV

Not long ago, few would have expected to see large numbers of older adults living with HIV. But in the major U.S. cities where most people with HIV live, 40 percent of them are over age 50. This graying of the AIDS epidemic is primarily the result of new classes of HIV medications, first introduced in the mid-1990s, that effectively suppress HIV and prevent the collapse of the immune system.
This article describes policy issues of concern for people aging with HIV.
