Living Outside the Safety Net: LGBT Families and Social Security
February 2013 | Human Rights Campaign National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare Foundation
The exclusion of same-sex spouses and domestic partners from Social Security benefits has long-term, life changing economic impact on couples and families across the country.
This publication highlihghts the lack of full Social Security benefits that are created by lack of relationship and family recognition. It was published prior to June 2013 when the Supreme Court struck down the rule that same-sex married couples cannot receive federal benefits. However, the publication is still relevant for the many states where same-sex unions remain legally unrecognized.
